Katarina Witt began to ice skate as early as age 5 years. Then, her talent became apparent and she was accepted to Karl-Marx Stadt's special schools. Coach Jutta was also in attendance. Witt achieved her breakthrough in the second position she placed in the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. From that moment on the elegance and grace of her skating captured the eye of all. Her dominance began in the sport. Olympic triumph at the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the ladies' silver medal in figure skating after an intense contest. In a more competitive competition, four years later, Witt was awarded the medal. The free skate she took was not a success, however the gold medal was awarded to her because of the performances she made in both the compulsory figures (short program) and mandatory figures. Witt was the first female to be crowned champion in male and female figure skating since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt had amazing success as a performer, but she returned to her sport to participate in her participation in the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. She placed seventh but enchanted the crowd despite not winning the medal. Witt was inducted to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in the year 1995.
